Jack’s heart sank. He had been played. He had been so focused on the job that he hadn’t realized what was happening.
“Thanks for the heads up,” Jack said, putting his hands up in surrender. “What do I do now?”
“I can get you out of the country,” the other hitman said. “I have a contact who can get you a new identity, a new life. But you have to leave now, before they realize what’s happened.”
Jack nodded, grateful for the lifeline. He packed up his things and left the country that same night, leaving his old life behind.
As he started his new life, Jack knew that he could never go back to being a hitman. But he also knew that he had learned a valuable lesson. He would never trust a client again without doing his own research first. And he would never forget the debt he owed to the hitman who had saved his life.
